Chives

Trying my luck with chives.

Amazing anything can grow in this heat .. there has been up to 38 C in the shadehouse. The seedling of Mibuna greens and Pak Choi are just hanging in there with dear life. Only one Chervil seed was curious enough to sprout. No sign of Celery seeds wanting to sprout.

Green pepper, beans and rockets

All the red peppers are now harvested and they taste wonderful! Only the long peppers were true red peppers.

Now the 2 green pepper plants are setting flowers and fruits for the 2. time. I might let some of them turn red, as I did with the first batch.

Baby size green peppers

Rockets (arugulas) and beans

February 19-22

The first few mangetout peas are ready to be picked and eaten. Amazing, they were only sown 1 1/2 month ago!

Flowers on rocket plants for seed production

Flowers on frilly lettuce for seed production .. the fluffy ones are ready to be picked. One day the wind dispersed some of the lettuce seeds with the result that I now find baby lettuce growing in neighboring soil bags and even on the pebbled floor.

I started experimenting with new seeds: Japanese greens (Mibuna), Chervil, Pak Choi, Chives and Celery. The Mibuna greens are ready when 10-20 cm tall. Pak Choi in 35-50 days. Chervil in 30 days. Chives in 90-120 days (wonder why). Celery in 70 days. Let's see what happens :-)

February 01-18

12. Dec. 2009

2. Feb. 2010

Picked 3. Feb. 2010 .. couldn't wait any longer

Rockets [arugulas] producing seed pods .. hope for strong seeds, as the parent plants are exceptionally nice

Because the seeds are sown at regular intervals in at least 4 different "soil bags", I can pick frilly lettuce and rocket leaves daily.
The tomatoes are coming to an end. Planted a new tomato seedling in the hope of getting "winter tomatoes". Let's see!
The 2 new beans plants are already in flower, sown in Jan. The 2 mangetout pea plants are developing nicely, also sown in Jan. Broccoli seedlings growing well, sown in Jan.
Carrots and Cos lettuce seedlings are not doing well... think the temp. is too hot and humidity too low, as the Cos lettuce were brilliant in the winter months. The Swiss chard was growing nicely, but it also got affected by the heat.
